Why Multiple Myeloma?
Nowell's Furniture has a personal stake in the fight against Multiple Myeloma. Jerry Nowell was diagnosed with the disease in May, 2010 and has been fighting it with the advanced therapies available at Duke University Medical Center. Earlier this year, Jerry underwent a stem cell transplant which has slowed the progress of this incurable disease.
What is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell present in bone marrow. Plasma cells normally make proteins called antibodies to help fight infections.
In multiple myeloma, a group of abnormal plasma cells (myeloma cells) multiplies, raising the number of plasma cells to a higher-than-normal level. Since these cells normally make proteins, the level of abnormal proteins in your blood also may go up. Health problems caused by multiple myeloma can affect the bones, immune system, kidneys and red blood cell count.
Multiple Myeloma is diagnosed in approximately 20,000 new patients every year in the US, and the illness claims the lives of nearly half that number annually.
What is the Fund-2-Fight?
Nowell’s is teaming up again this year with the Duke University Medical Center to benefit Multiple Myeloma Cancer Research, and support people diagnosed and their families, by raising money for cancer research through Nowell’s Fund To Fight Multiple Myeloma.
Make a difference in the lives of thousands of people by helping Nowell’s Contemporary Furniture raise funds for cancer research to fight Multiple Myeloma.
How can you help?
From November 25, 2011 - January 16th, 2012, for a $50+ donation to the Fund-2-Fight, you will receive a $200 credit toward the purchase of an Ekornes seat. In addition, Nowell's will match donations up to $100 made at the store, no purchase necessary.
While there is currently no cure for Multiple Myeloma, on-going research raises great hope that emerging therapies may turn Multiple Myeloma into a manageable disease and, ultimately, lead to a cure. All contributions to the Nowell’s Fund-2-Fight Multiple Myeloma will used to support Multiple Myeloma research at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center.
